Once you’ve finished the tutorial, you’re simply left to fend for yourself. Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord is still in early access so the introduction is especially rough right now. This is also why it’s good to raid enemy villages as it cuts down on ai lords’ income which in turn means they’ll have less troops to fight you with.The land of Calradia can be incredibly daunting when you’re first starting out. A lord with just one village will have a harder time recruiting new troops to fill up his warband than a lord with three villages and a castle. The AI does not obey the same rules as you do with regards to recruiting or income, they’ll automatically recieve troops at a steady rate determined, as far as I can tell, by the wealth of their fiefs. The people in your party will no longer complain about them or vice versa and it’s usually easier to get a spare companion than it is to recruit an ai lord. A good solution to the companions-leaving problem is to give the people leaving a fief.
You can give fiefs both to companions and to ai lords but the moment you give a fief to a companion they stop being your companion, which usually isn’t what you’ve want since you’ve levelled them up for hours and chosen their skills to match your warband.
If you give him a village you still get an army but you lose income. By giving him a castle instead of a village you get rid of a money sink and get an army in return. This means that the ai lord now owning the castle will garrison it (any troops you leave there are transferred to him btw)and he’ll also act on his own, riding around the map with an army. Once you’re an independent king castles are good because you can give them out as fiefs. But they’ll leave again eventually if you haven’t addressed their complaints. Companions that leave end up in a tavern somewhere and you can recruit them again.
